What is Photobiomodulation?

  Imagine how your body reacts with exposure to sunlight- it takes that energy of light and stimulates cellular changes such as Vitamin D and serotonin production. Think about how a plant uses sunlight for photosynthesis to create life for itself. Photobiomodulation technology uses superluminous and laser diodes that transmit photons directly over diseased or traumatised tissue. These particles of energy are selectively absorbed by the cell membrane and intracellular molecules, resulting in the initiation of a cascade of complex physiological reactions, leading to the restoration of normal cell structure and function.
  
  The process is healing and therefore results in the elimination of symptoms, including pain. In addition, it enhances the body’s immune response and facilitates natural healing.

What is the difference between Photobiomodulation Therapy and regular Light Therapy?
- Regular Light Therapy is exposure to light that is brighter than indoor light and is used to help with cognitive abilities that may suffer due to depression, seasonal affective disorder, or sleep disorders. If you have ever heard of a “light box,” or if you have one in your home, this is a form of light therapy.
  
  Photobiomodulation Therapy (near infra-red therapy) is the application of red and near infra-red light over injuries or lesions to improve wound and soft tissue healing, reduce inflammation and give relief for both acute and chronic pain.
  
  The effects of PBMT are photochemical (like photosynthesis in plants). When the correct intensity and treatment times are used, red and near infrared light reduces oxidative stress and increases ATP. This improves cell metabolism and reduces inflammation. These effects can be enhanced with pulses however when analgesia is required there is a second mechanism which works best when a strong continuous beam is applied.
  
  The red and near infrared light (600nm-1000nm) commonly used in PBMT can be produced by laser or high intensity LEDs. The intensity of PBMT lasers and LED's is not high like a surgical laser. PBMT devices are typically delivering 10mW - 500mW (0.01 -> 0.01 Watts). The power density typically ranges from 0.005W/Cm² -> 5 W/Cm².

What should I bring for my appointment?

  Please bring some comfortable indoor footwear like slip-on-shoes or a pair of slippers to navigate around the center
  
  We strive to ensure the comfort and safety of staff and visitors by encouraging a smoke free and fragrance free environment. As such we request that all offices and spaces used by staff and clients remain free of chemical-based scented products
  
  The NovoTHOR photobiomodulation pod must make direct contact with your skin so you will be required to lie in the bed without clothing. Our reception host will provide you with a robe and locker key (for a locker where you will keep your clothes) and then show you to the change room to undress in privacy.
How long does a treatment take?

  NovoThor bed treatments are 12-15 minutes and LX2 treatments can range from thirty minutes to 1 hour in length.
  
  Depending on the nature and chronicity of the condition, many clients chose to have a 15 minute session in the NovoThor bed followed by an individual LX2 treatment session with our photobiomodulation therapist.
  
  Your therapist will discuss how long each treatment will take at your initial consultation.
How many treatments are required?

  Treatments typically take 30 minutes to one hour and should be applied two or three times a week. The number of treatments will depend on the persistence of the symptoms and the extent of the underlying problem. Based on the genetic makeup of the cells, an individual’s response to light therapy will vary to some degree.
Is Photobiomodulation Therapy safe?
- Is Photobiomodulation Therapy safe?
  
  Hundreds of research studies have shown laser therapy to be safe and effective. The light that is used falls within a safe parameter (660nm and 830-840nm) where it does not have the capability to burn tissue or cause any DNA mutations. Laser Therapy is non-invasive, non-toxic and non-thermal. Unlike other forms of radiation, laser therapy is beneficial rather than harmful to tissue
How does photobiomodulation therapy compare with other conventional treatments?
- How does photobiomodulation therapy compare with other conventional treatments?
  
  Photobiomodulation Therapy is able to influence the problem directly at the cellular level, resulting in therapeutic benefits that are long lasting and address the underlying condition. This is unlike many other conventional treatments, which only deal with the symptoms or site of pain, without addressing the source of pain. Working on a cellular level takes time and patience but the results are longer lasting without the risk of side effects.
Are there any side effects?

  Unlike most pharmaceutical solutions and other therapeutic options, laser therapy is non-toxic, non-invasive and in over one million individual treatments, no significant adverse effects have been noted.
  
  You may experience an intensification of symptoms and fatigue following a treatment due to high sensitivity tissue response. You can expect this to be mild and self-limiting to less than 24 hours.
Are there any situations where photobiomodulation shouldn't be used?
- Are there any situations where photobiomodulation shouldn't be used?
  
  Yes, while there have been no reported side effects of photobiomodulation, in some cases it is best to err on the side of caution. Circumstances to not have the treatment include: treatment directly over the abdomen or lumbar spine during pregnancy; treatment directly over the Thymus gland and; treatment over known malignancies and tumors.

  Yes, there is parking for the disabled on the left side of the parking lot with a gradual incline onto the building's street level sidewalk. Borealis is on the ground floor and the space, including our washroom, is wheelchair accessible.
Does Borealis provide a personal care worker to assist a physically challenged client?

  Not at this time, still we welcome and encourage those with impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency and leg length differences to attend appointments accompanied by a trusted helper.
  
  To ease treatment accessibility and efficiency a client’s helper will be entrusted to assist the challenged client into flexible clothing to ease therapeutic access to the their bare skin, help their friend get in and out of their wheelchair as well as assist them to get in and out of the Borealis NovoThor light pod.
